Marvell Technology (MRVL)

Custom AI silicon + optical DSPs + data-center networking chips — an AVGO-style ASIC play

AI exposure 65% — derived from reported segment revenue, not asserted.

Where it sits

Silicon Layer → Semiconductor Devices · figures rebased to Q2 FY2027, reported 2026-08-27

No business is a majority here. Custom AI accelerators (XPUs) for hyperscalers is 46% of revenue, ahead of Optical Components & Photonics at 30% — placement rule 2 puts the primary with the largest business, so Semiconductor Devices. The rest is tagged separately: Optical Components & Photonics at 30%; Network Switching & Hardware at 24%.

Also tagged: secondary in Connectivity → Optical Components & Photonics; secondary in Connectivity → Network Switching & Hardware.

Reported segments

Marvell ($2,739.3M Q2 FY2027, +36.6% YoY). One reportable segment, disaggregated by END MARKET: data center 79% ($2,171.5M, +45.7% YoY — up from 74% of revenue a year ago) and communications and other 21% ($567.8M, +10.1%). The data-center line carries both the custom-XPU franchise (B1) and the electro-optics and interconnect silicon (B3); that split is not disclosed and is held at the prior Atlas ratio. Data centre gained five points of mix in a year — the non-AI half is growing, just far slower.

How the 65% is built

Investment read

Moat. Multi-year hyperscaler ASIC programmes and optical-DSP IP are genuine design-win lock-in — once a custom XPU is designed in it runs for years — and the February 2026 acquisitions of Celestial AI and XConn add photonic fabric and CXL switching that no merchant rival ships together. But every socket is competed against Broadcom before it is won.

Bottleneck / pricing power. Real but capped: non-GAAP gross margin 58.9% and operating margin 35.0% in Q1 FY2027 on 28% growth, with Q2 guided to +35% YoY. The ceiling is visible in the comparison — Broadcom runs the same business at a 67.3% operating margin and took more than $30B of AI bookings in its own quarter against $10.8B shipped.

Role in the AI stack. The merchant second source in custom AI silicon, moving into scale-up interconnect.
